University of Nottingham

“I am excited, together with the UoN team, to be part of HEAL4WARD, a world-class European consortium where collaboration will drive the development of sustainable biomaterials for healthcare. At Nottingham, we look forward to combining materials and technologies from across the network to create 3D-printed microneedle devices, while hosting Doctoral Candidates and working with partners across Europe to evaluate their performance.”

Background

Scientific background

Vincenzo Taresco is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemistry at the University of Nottingham. He obtained his PhD in Polymer Chemistry from Sapienza University of Rome in 2014. Following his PhD, Vincenzo joined the University of Nottingham as a postdoctoral researcher in the School of Pharmacy before becoming a Senior Research Officer and Group Leader in the School of Chemistry in 2019. In 2022, he was awarded the prestigious Nottingham Research Fellowship. To date, he has authored more than 120 peer-reviewed scientific publications.Alongside his role in HEAL-4WARD, Vincenzo is involved in several collaborative research programmes. He initially joined the EPSRC Prosperity Partnership, Biobased and Biodegradable Polymers for a Sustainable Future (EP/X025489/1), as a Co-Investigator and now serves as Principal Investigator. The programme brings together the University of Nottingham, the University of York and CRODA. Within the consortium, he also leads Work Package 2, which focuses on developing novel polymers through polycondensation methodologies. The interdisciplinary programme addresses the challenge of biodegradability in polymer liquid formulations across applications including cosmetics and home-care products.Vincenzo also leads an Industrial Doctoral Landscape Award jointly funded by EPSRC and AstraZeneca. The project brings together researchers from AstraZeneca, the School of Pharmacy at the University of Nottingham, Dr Veeren Chauhan and Professor Antoine Buchard at the University of York. The PhD project focuses on developing novel polymers for amorphous solid dispersion systems, with the aim of improving the solubility, stability and therapeutic efficacy of poorly soluble drug candidates.

Personal background

Vincenzo Taresco is originally from a small town in central Italy and completed both his undergraduate studies and PhD at Sapienza University of Rome. During his university years, he became fascinated by polymers and their potential for medical and pharmaceutical applications, an interest that has shaped his research career ever since.Throughout his postdoctoral and academic career at the University of Nottingham, Vincenzo expanded this focus to include biodegradability and sustainability, applying polymer science to address challenges in healthcare and beyond. This work led him to collaborate closely with Dr Robert Owen and Dr Geoffrey Rivers. Together, they are contributing their expertise in polymer synthesis, characterisation, cell biology and advanced 3D printing to the HEAL-4WARD consortium.

Project Involvement and Roles

Within HEAL-4WARD, Vincenzo Taresco is the main supervisor of DC4. He is supported by Dr Robert Owen and Dr Geoffrey Rivers, who serve as co-supervisors and contribute complementary expertise to the doctoral project.

Current activities

Vincenzo Taresco’s research group focuses on creating sustainable, functionalised and multi-responsive polymeric devices by integrating bio-renewable moieties into polymer backbones. His research spans applications ranging from drug delivery and additive manufacturing to crop protection and smart packaging.

Vincenzo is an Assistant Professor in the School of Chemistry. Alongside his research, he teaches fundamental organic and polymer chemistry to first-year students, as well as more advanced courses and laboratory activities in polymer science.
