Background
Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis graduated from the Medical School of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens in 1994 and completed his PhD in 1998 on the antimicrobial activity of polyunsaturated fatty acids against Gram-negative bacteria. After specialist training in Internal Medicine, he undertook advanced training in the immunology of infectious diseases at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands. He joined the academic staff of the University of Athens in 2001 and became Professor of Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases in 2018.His scientific work has centred on the heterogeneity of host immune responses in sepsis and on biomarker-guided therapeutic strategies. Evangelos has led major investigator-initiated studies, including SAVE, SAVE-MORE and ImmunoSep, and has contributed to international research on privacy-preserving clinical machine learning. He is also President of the Hellenic Institute for the Study of Sepsis, Chair of the European Sepsis Alliance, a Board Member of the Global Sepsis Alliance and President of the Hellenic Society for Chemotherapy. He currently has 48,200 citations, an h-index of 100 and an i10-index of 450.
Evangelos J. Giamarellos-Bourboulis was born in Athens, Greece, where he has spent most of his life. Early in his medical career, he became interested in why patients with apparently similar infections can follow very different clinical courses. This question led him to investigate the interaction between pathogens and the host immune response and, ultimately, to pursue precision approaches that match diagnosis and treatment to each patient’s biological profile. He chose an academic clinical path because it allows him to combine patient care, experimental research, collaborative clinical trials and the mentoring of young scientists.
