The HEAL4WARD project officially commenced on 1 March 2026, marking the beginning of a four-year collaborative effort to advance research and training in the diagnosis and treatment of wound infections. The project combines advanced nanomaterials, antimicrobial peptidomimetics, 3D printing technologies and Artificial Intelligence (AI) to prototype multifunctional microneedle wound patches capable of:
- On-demand antimicrobial treatment
- Real-time, label-free detection of infection biomarkers
- Monitoring of bacterial biofilms
- Supporting personalised infection care
On 31 March and 1 April, HEAL4WARD held a productive Kick-off meeting hosted by Sapienza University of Rome and the project coordinator, Iolanda Francolini. The meeting brought together 17 consortium members to align on the project’s strategic objectives, implementation roadmap and collaborative framework. Over two days, participants engaged in a series of interactive discussions and hands-on workshops designed to establish a strong foundation for the project’s execution and the recruitment of 11 Doctoral Candidates (DCs).

Setting the groundwork for collaboration
The first day focused on partners’ introductions and on building foundation for interdisciplinary collaborations. Each partner presented their expertise, research focus and planned contributions, fostering a shared understanding of the consortium’s multidisciplinary strengths. Followed “Tour de Table”, Joanna Plesnaik from accelopment delivered an insightful session on communication, dissemination and exploitation, with a particular emphasis on EU requirements, open science practices and the involvement of DCs in different outreach activities.
Advancing scientific integration and project implementation
The second day focused on the operational and scientific implementation of HEAL4WARD. Interactive workshops facilitated discussions on cross-work package synergies, interconnections between research activities and the role of secondments in strengthening scientific integration. Key management aspects were also addressed, including governance structures, reporting obligations and project management tools. A session on recruitment outlined the project’s strategy for attracting DCs, while dedicated discussions explored the design of the training programme, supervision models and monitoring frameworks.
Strong start for a four-year journey
The Kick-off meeting successfully established a shared vision among partners and defined clear next steps. The interactive format enabled partners to actively contribute to shaping the project’s implementation, reinforcing a strong consortium spirit from the very beginning.
With a well-defined structure, committed partners and a clear roadmap, HEAL4WARD is now well-positioned to deliver impactful results over the next four years.
Stay tuned for the project updates and the soon-to-open call for applications!
